Wicked Wings

Busy today with last day robots. Things went well though, and I was home before 9. Didn’t have to do much and no one was excessively anxious. I did have to drive but that also let me bring chicken nuggets, which is always a plus.

I had hoped to get some more helium today but there was none readily available and I wasn’t interested in hauling filled balloons around town, so I’m sticking with the single one I’ve got. But the wings and bits all came together okay. It could use another round of integration to get better colors, better wearablility, and adaptability for future shirts. But I’m pretty happy with this round 1I was also excited to pull out the lighted earrings, which we last used before my ears were pierced. They’re still the prototype model with no light sensor and no inner ring, but they’re really well constructed and in good shape. I’m also stealing L’s new pendant for the day. I suspect they won’t mind. Plus I want to give it a runtime … Continue reading. And I’m particularly proud of the GIF [fig 1], which looped really well and gave me tiny sequin sparkles.

I used my sewing machine for the first time in years. Which went okay. Shanda and I got it working yesterday (to the extent this ancient and abused machine “works”) and today I actually used it to make a thing [fig 2]. Nothing complicated, but enough to make me actually push at some of the old feels. When I learned to sew in the 1900s the typical sewing machine interface seemed clunky but acceptable. Today the 1870s of it feels pretty hard to take, not to mention unsafe. Logistics aside it was mostly fine. I am rusty to be sure but once I got started it was easy enough. There’s still a decent amount of space between where I am and being able to sew without feeling terrible, but I’m closer than I was last week. And it feels less survival-y 2Before I had transportation I never had access to enough material to make my own clothes, even if I could have found a machine to use. Later I maybe could have but I got a job before I could drive so it wasn’t as necessary. I also suspect there would have been social consequences if I had even shittier clothes. So I never attached survival to … Continue reading than, for example, my fear of forced exercise.

Tomorrow I’m taking Dog and Shanda with me to the robot competition, or at least to someplace nearby for their own adventure. Dog likes being in the car and we rented one where he can lay down and walk around pretty easily, which I suspect he’ll like even more. I think it might be fun to take him for a road trip sometime. But we’ll see how he does tomorrow first.

1 I was also excited to pull out the lighted earrings, which we last used before my ears were pierced. They’re still the prototype model with no light sensor and no inner ring, but they’re really well constructed and in good shape. I’m also stealing L’s new pendant for the day. I suspect they won’t mind. Plus I want to give it a runtime test, to see how long the battery lasts, and I want to think for a day about how to keep it facing forward when you actually wear it. It might need a better geometry on the back, to keep it from flipping.
2 Before I had transportation I never had access to enough material to make my own clothes, even if I could have found a machine to use. Later I maybe could have but I got a job before I could drive so it wasn’t as necessary. I also suspect there would have been social consequences if I had even shittier clothes. So I never attached survival to machine sewing. It was just all the punishments about it thst make it so hard.
