Ra Ra Ree, Kick Them in the Knee

Day 5 of sick leave, though I am starting to feel better. I was only choking on my own fluids for parts of the day, not all of it.

We both felt well enough to watch a movie: But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) 1When I saw thst Shanda had ordered this I thought it was a duplicate, but I’m thinking of Pumpkin (2002) with Christina Ricci – not the same plot, but the same hair style and a similar journey for the protagonist.. It’s a fun movie about Natasha Lyonne being sent to an over-the-top un-gay camp when other people decide she has the gay. At camp she’s oppressed in all the ways you expect, but also does get to figure out that she is gay instead of not knowing what’s happening. It’s got an absurdist style and lots of color (though a pretty shitty transfer to DVD so it’s a bit muted) – it is clearly a little John Waters.

It works though, in letting us see through the ritual of conversion to the motivations of the players. Lyonne and Clea Duvall 2It’s somehow exactly the same as her Veep (HBO) character, in all the ways you might hope for. But honestly she’s really good in this, dropping lines like she doesn’t care at all about the joke in there, besting an angry Karen just by changing her tone and posture. are great together. There’s a blue-haired 3https://twitter.com/sarayasin/status/1185208811340079111 90s goth who’s into girls and pain, which is sort of my speed, and it’s got Richard Moll as a bear running a safe house for wayward queers, which I feel like could be a movie all on its own. It even gives us a happy ending, after promising all season that it’s going to vote people off the island – out of societal support – capriciously and doing so several times. Do watch.

Shanda imagines this movie would have been very useful to her in 1999, when she was just entering high school. But because the sex it implies has been infected by the gay agenda it has an R rating and wouldn’t have been available to you, due to intersectional queer and age discrimination, not to mention the religiously-themed oppression of your childhood home.

If my lungs are up for it, and if the opposition shows up, tomorrow is a costume building day. It would have been nice to do a day when Shanda and I feel better, but I want to be sure it gets done so we’re going to try to make it go anyway. We’ve ignored most things this week but I do want to get packages out on Monday, even if we’re still sick. And hopefully I get a dragon package next week myself, so I can get it tried out and trimmed up before I need it.

Also watched this today: https://youtu.be/m_uDrH9a1ng It’s nothing revolutionary but I think the presentation might hit some of you in the right way. Might help you find a footing that recognizes your growth and independence.
